Hormone Health Part Five is all about Xenoestrogens, the synthetic oestrogens found slushing around, in every nook and cranny, of our environment, as well as weight gain and skin health.
As promised at the end of Hormone Health Part Four I will also cover all of the Phenol containing essential oils for clearing our hormone receptor sites. In addition, I will cover all of the other essential oils which can rebuild and make our receptor sites responsive to our natural hormones again. I personally believe that we should all be using these essential oils very regularly. And, I also believe we should commit to a lifetime of Milk Thistle use also! (It cleanses the liver!)
Hormone Health, Artificial Hormones, Weight Gain & Skin Health
As you now know, endocrine disruptors, particularly in the form of Xenoestrogens, are ubiquitous in our environments.
Minuscule exposure to Xenoestrogens, (aka synthetic Oestrogens) can be catastrophic for our hormone health. And, because our hormones are our internal communication system, this is actually catastrophic for our overall health, in reality.
But, as we have learnt in Hormone Health Part Four, there is a critical dietary factor at play here also!
The two issues combined start to erode our health, until all the outward signs of hormonal disruption finally appear. Up until this point, even though there have been symptoms and associated difficulties, most people fail to act to remedy what’s going on.
This is partly because they don’t recognise what’s going on, but it’s also due to the idea that, if they do nothing, all the symptoms will go away on their own.
There’s also a subconscious sense that seeking advice from Western medical advocates could likely create more problems than it solves. The blind faith, in Western medicine, of the elderly within our society, it’s certainly not shared by the pre-retirement generations!
Extreme Hormonal Imbalance
Most women only start taking their hormone imbalances seriously when they are experiencing extreme symptoms, that often affect their outward appearance.
Cyclic women may experience a lot of pain, weight gain, and Acne that prompt them to do something about their hormones.
Peri-menopausal and Menopausal women may be losing a lot of sleep, gaining weight, having hot flushes and find themselves unable to say a kind word to anyone… (There was a time when words came shooting out of my mouth like bullets… I could floor anyone, from family members, friends and work colleagues, to complete strangers, at a hundred paces!)
A lot of Peri-menopausal and Menopausal women also develop skin conditions, which often afflict our face, usually presenting as some kind of hormonal Acne…
But, I’m afraid, whilst these symptoms are horrendous, they are, in many ways, the least of our worries!
Many Things Cause Extreme Hormone Issues
Xenoestrogens, processed foods with additives, high levels of stress, too much digital device exposure, insufficient sleep, and environmental allergens can all be disrupting our hormones in such a way that they are likely to promote diseases as well as increasing fat storage in our bodies. We all need to get the following out of our environments, to the best of our abilities, if we are to stand a chance of regaining hormonal normalcy in our lives.
People can have allergies to animals, dust, mould and very commonly foods.
The two main food groups that cause hormonal disruption and lead to a lot of unpleasant side-effects, (skin problems, weight gain, Asthma, auto-immune conditions like Eczema and Psoriasis etc…) are dairy and grains.
*I also think legumes are a problem for an increasing number of people… I certainly can’t go anywhere near them. Lentils are my dementals!!!
Legumes are all peas and beans as well as lentils. This includes chickpeas, and, believe it or not, peanuts! (As the name suggests, peanuts are legumes!)
Peanuts aren’t the only ‘nuts’ that aren’t really nuts… Walnuts, almonds, and cashews are actually drupes.
…drupes (from the Greek dryppa, meaning “tree-ripened”)… are fruit with a fleshy outer coating enclosing a hard shell containing a seed: almonds, walnuts, olives, dates, coffee [and] coconut” are all drupes.
Nuts are confusing… and, unsurprisingly the internet is awash with conflicting information…
Nuts are defined as a simple, dry fruit with one seed (very occasionally two) in which the seed case wall becomes very hard at maturity. True nuts include pecan, sweet chestnut, beech, acorns, hazel, hornbeam and alder. Peanuts, almonds, pistachios, cashews, horse chestnuts and pine nuts are not nuts.
This quote and the one above are from The Telegraph
Needless to say, plenty of people have nut allergies as well as allergies to legumes… but, less people actually have allergies to nuts when we put peanuts in the correct context. As peanuts are a legume, a lot of people that are potentially at risk of death, after the consumption of peanuts, may not have a problem with real nuts in the slightest.
Acne & Cystic Acne
I am meeting increasing numbers of teenage girls and boys who have serious Acne outbreaks. It’s heart-wrenching for me, because I know, before I ask, most of them will be on long-term antibiotics. This really breaks my heart, because, not only is this wantonly unnecessary, the damage the antibiotics are doing to these young people’s guts is catastrophic!
As mentioned in Hormone Health Part Two, the gut is critically important for hormone health, and hormone health is almost always reflected in the skin.
Curing Acne With Diet
Eliminating dairy and grains from the diet is usually enough to clear up even the worst case of Acne!!!
*Eggs can also cause big problems, but it’s best to start by eliminating dairy and grains to begin with, and if problems persist a month or two down the road, then try eliminating eggs too.
***Sugar is the worst neuro-toxin going, (think early onset dementia and you’ll know what I mean by neuro-toxin!) Sugar also destroys the microbiome, and so it stands to reason that we should cut out sugar from our diet in the main. (There’s LOADS of hidden sugar in processed food… and there’s LOADS of chemicals too… Sadly, it is very unlikely that you will be in any way well if you don’t start cooking your food from scratch. This means fresh produce and good quality Organic grass-fed protein sources.
****All of the chemicals in foods are there for the benefit of the manufacturer… NOT YOU! The colours and flavour enhancers are used so you’ll think that what you’re eating is the best option available in terms of pleasure delivery… and all the preservatives are to extend shelf life… keeping food that would normally be putrefied, somehow edible, without giving you a mould or bacteria induced case of food poisoning.
Why Are So Many Teenagers Suffering From Acne?
Getting back to all the young people I see that are clearly in so much trouble dietarily, and consequently hormonally, which is so evident in their skin… I also know, before asking that most of these heavily afflicted young people will have come into the world via C section, (Caesarean section), thereby missing the first, and most important inoculation of their mother’s immune system / microbiome. A natural birth allows babies to come into contact with their mother’s immune system via the birth canal, but obviously, C section babies do not have this exposure.
I also know, that a lot of C section babies miss out on being breast fed also, which is another vital way in which the immune system in babies is built up.
This, of course, means that the digestive systems of these children are severely compromised, because the microbiome they should have received from their mother is missing. As our microbiomes, (aka the friendly bacteria that resides in our gut), forms about 80% of our immune system… And, because our guts are responsible for regulating and producing a lot of our hormones, these significant deficiencies in our microbiomes lead to all manner of problems.
All auto-immune conditions start in the gut!
And, this is why I believe that Western medicine will be declared the gravest crime against humanity before too long! If Acne is a symptom of gravely deficient gut bacteria, then the prescribing of long term antibiotics is utterly INSANE!
Antibiotics destroy bacteria indiscriminately in the body. This means that our microbiomes are all but destroyed after taking antibiotics. (And we wonder why we are besieged by autoimmune diseases these days!!!)
Conversely, because essential oils are effectively the immune systems of the plants they oils are derived from, essential oils only destroy pathogenic bacteria, preserving the good bacteria that humans and plants both need for survival!
This is why Oregano Essential Oil, which is antibacterial, AS WELL AS anti-viral and anti-fungal is the panacea of the future.
Antibiotics only do one thing, and they do it horrendously!
Gut Health & Migraines
As a bit of an interesting aside, but relevant all the same… a couple I met earlier on in the year, returned to tell me of what had happened after they had dutifully read a book I had recommended: The Plant Paradox by Steven R Gundry. (I beseeched them to write in and tell the story themselves, but like so many others, they agreed to do so and then they left, insisting that they would write soon… but never did.) However, the story of the woman, who looked amazingly well on their second visit, is too important for it not to be told.
This woman had suffered from very frequent migraines for many, many years. And, like all migraines, they were incredibly debilitating. So, when the migraines struck it meant that all commitments had to be cancelled.
The couple had tried every means of “conventional’ help, but none of the pills did anything. However, after adopting the Steven R Gundry diet, which excludes dairy and grains, there had not been a single migraine since.
*Steven R Gundry also advocates only eating local seasonal food, when in season, and he tells us to eliminate seeds from our diet.
So, from regular migraines to NONE AT ALL! That’s really something isn’t it!?!
Our diets are massively important!
*However, despite Steven R Gundry’s view that all seeds should be excluded from our diets, in Hormone Health Part Six I will explain why there’s no way I’ll be giving up Flaxseeds any time soon!
These days, it’s much more widely understood that stress is a killer. Many complementary therapists, who really know their stuff, are now citing stress as the leading cause of serious illness.
Some stress is vitally important for us. Our bodies are designed to respond well to short-lived assailable forms of stress. However, much of the stress we now have to endure, within the modern world, looks very different to the forms of stress our bodies were designed to respond well to in eras past.
Stress, nowadays, tends to be chronic, and it tends to be insurmountable unless big sacrifices are made. But, increasing numbers of people have become so unwell with these consistent forms of stress, usually from work etc, that they are jacking in their jobs, taking a major income cut, and ultimately regaining their health.
I’ve already written at length about EMF, and so I won’t elaborate here. Just follow the links for more information if you’d like to know more.
There is also information about Dirty Energy and Blue Screen Radiation, which are all sources of stress in our lives.
Now to the Xenoestrogens…
Whose heard of Bisphenol-A?
What if I were to say BPA?
I look forward to the day that we all know what BPA is and why we should be eliminating it from our environments.
BPA’s profoundly toxic effects are well documented. But, still the majority of us have no idea that the linings of many of our canned goods and metal water bottles etc are plastic and contain BPA.
All of the polycarbonate hard plastics, often used to make things like smoothie maker jugs, (even the ones that accompany blenders which invite us to use their jugs to make soup, owing to the heat generated whilst blending), which is a disastrous thing to do!
What is equally disastrous, for the same reason, is to drink water from warm plastic bottled water.
***Warmth releases a lot more of the BPA from the plastic into the contents of the bottle or container.
I mentioned that the thermal coating on till receipts was Xenoestrogenic in Hormone Health Part One. This is because it contains BPA!
Bisphenol A has been proven to be one of the world’s most toxic endocrine disruptors. BPA is even linked to hormone-related breast and prostate cancers and is also implicated in polycystic ovarian syndrome, (PCOS), and even early onset puberty.
But, sadly the hard plastics being made without BPA are proving to be even more toxic… And, BPA is just one of over a thousand chemicals and compounds that interferes with our delicate hormonal system, which will inevitably ultimately result in serious, chronic health conditions.
Hormone Health Part One has more information on this… it’s in the Food Packaging section…
Hormone Disrupting Chemicals In Our Skincare
There are some egregiously damaging ingredients in our skincare products. So much so, in fact, they should be called skin-harm products, and not skin-care products!!
Many skincare ingredients, which are some of the most widely used endocrine-disrupting chemicals in the world today, (or EDCs), like the ubiquitous phthalates and triclosan in soaps, have already been documented in Skincare Ingredients To Avoid.
There are even hormone disrupting compounds, like PCB’s, in practically all the fish in the sea. Many Nutritionists and Naturopaths are now saying it isn’t safe to consume any fish at all, any more.
We have released in excess of 85,000 chemicals into our environment since the turn of the last century… disease rates are suggesting that this was a really bad idea!
Serious Diseases Cause Weight Gain
The science supporting the conclusion that implicates endocrine disruptors in many serious diseases is very convincing!
Aside from endocrine disruptors being a known cause of premature death, it’s their impact on our quality of life before we finally succumb to our own mortality, which is particularly distressing…
There are so many debilitating conditions, all of which are autoimmune in origin, like MS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis etc, etc… that the final ten or so years of most people’s lives these days, are pretty pain-filled, gravely emotionally challenging and by and large, pretty unrewarding from a physical standpoint. Because these conditions also affect our mental capacities also, there is often a considerable decline in mental fulfilment also…
Obesity & Diabetes
Obesity and diabetes are now considered to be a much more broad-spectrum problem. Sugar consumption is deemed only one of many contributory factors. But because insulin, the hormone used to process sugar in our bodies, is integral to our hormonal system, sugar has a direct impact on our hormonal balance.
There’s no denying that anything which promotes an insulin response in the body converts our bodies into a fat storing machine. This is why, when people cut sugar out of their diet, for a minimum of thirty days, their bodies revert back to their natural state… that being a fat burning system!
*If you want to lose weight this is the key way to doing it.
Fat doesn’t make us fat! Fat only makes us fat if we eat sugar and processed carbohydrates! (And, yes! Alcohol is a sugar to the body too!)
Converting the body to fat burning and intermittent fasting are the only two ways of losing weight.
***All the fat clubs like Slimming World etc are all part of the taxation system of the obese. (Higher prices for things like Lean Cuisine compared to their higher fat content alternatives is another.)
*****Low fat means high sugar! Eat full fat everything! But, avoid unhealthy fats at all costs.
*******Saturated fats are healthy. Manmade saturated fats are deathly! Palm Oil is also heart attack-central… and it’s practically in all factory made baked goods.
**********Palm oil is a flavour enhancer just like the horrendously neuro-toxic and endocrine-disrupting MSG. Both of these ingredients make cheap, nasty and unhealthy ingredients taste edible.
But, it’s not only food that’s an issue here. Environmental toxins are also definitely at play in these conditions… and others… Xenoestrogens are definitely helping to make us fat, and actually prevent us from losing weight.
I will cover weight loss issues coupled with endocrine disruption in a later article in the series… Suffice to say here, when your hormones are out of whack it is almost impossible to lose weight.
It these instances, people who workout to keep body fat in check are having the opposite result.
Working out is stressful to the body, and because stress is an endocrine disruptor, working out, instead of shedding the pounds, actually helps us load them on.
It’s only when our hormones are in balance, (which means that we have all of our sources of stress completely under control), can we actually shed the pounds.
***And, don’t forget, our belly fat actually produces Oestrogens all on it’s ownsome… which is why I need to devote an entire article to the issue of hormone balance and weight loss! it’s a very, very complex issue!
Neurological conditions, including Alzheimers and early onset dementia, (that I was definitely beginning to suffer from four or five years ago), in my case was caused by an over-indulgence in all of the wrong things:
- Electronic devices
- All manner of environmental toxins, ranging from plastics to household chemicals from cleaning products…
- All of these were compounded by high levels of inactivity. I was a wreck!
A Few Endo-Disrupting Diseases
Female reproductive disorders
- Breast cancer
- Male reproductive disorders
- Prostate cancer
Disease With No Gender Preference
- Immune impairment
- Auto-immune conditions – now over 80 debilitating conditions!
- Liver cancer
- Thyroid disorders (usually afflicting females)
Foods That Clear Cell Receptor Sites
As an added bonus to the essential oils that clear cell receptor sites, there are certain foods that get Xenoestrogens to detach from our cell receptor sites.
Cruciferous vegetables are immensely important. We should try to eat a leafy green vegetable, like Kale, every day, along with the other, more stocky, cruciferous veg, which include:
- Brussels sprouts
These vegetables provide the nutrients which permit our livers to pull Xenoestrogenic chemicals into the liver for processing. Here the Xenoestrogens are dismantled and deactivated ready for expulsion from the body.
Simply eating these foods will likely be enough if you have a clean-living lifestyle… but for many, using essential oils is becoming increasingly necessary.
Those that go down the contraceptive pill and HRT route to regulate their hormones are not only increasing the risk of fatal health conditions, but are also exposing everyone else to increased risks. Like antibiotics, synthetic hormones never get broken down by the body. This means that they are released back into our water supply in exactly the same form in which they entered the body.
Synthetic hormones are as disastrous as antibiotics. I will be devoting another article to this exploding subject in the future, also.
Hormone Balancing Essential Oils
Clary Sage Essential Oil
Clary Sage Essential Oil is the queen of all hormone balancing essential oils. It contains natural phytoestrogens which go to work on our Oestrogen levels.
- It can be used for all manner of dysfunction
- Treating infertility issues.
- Regulating our menstrual cycles
- Relieving PMS
- Treating PCOS
- Restoring hormonal balance during Perimenopause and Menopause
- Treating hormone related depression and anxiety
Clary Sage Essential Oil is even used during childbirth to appease anxiety and to help with contractions.
Clary Sage Essential Oil also lowers the risk of uterine and ovarian cancer.
How to use: Add five drops of Clary Sage Essential Oil to a small amount of good carrier oil, (Sweet Almond for example) and massage into your abdomen.
Fennel Essential Oil & Peppermint Essential Oil
Fennel Essential Oil or Peppermint Essential Oil are ideal for treating gut issues that lead to hormonal imbalances and autoimmune conditions.
How to use: Add a drop or two of either of these essential oils into a glass of warm water to help recondition the digestive tract. Sweet Orange Essential Oil is also perfect for this.
Conversely, add a few drops of the oil of your choice from the three stated above, and apply to your abdomen, massaging the oil into the skin until no residue can be felt.
Sandalwood Essential Oil
Sandalwood Essential Oil is the best oil for testosterone imbalance, making it great for people with PCOS. But Sandalwood Essential Oil is great for everyone!
How to use:Place up to five drops in a good carrier oil, (like Almond Oil), and apply to the base of your feet… if in public apply to the pulse points on the wrists and rub together vigourously.
Lavender Essential Oil & Geranium Essential Oil
Lavender Essential Oil and Geranium Essential Oil also help with hormone balancing. You will find that these two oils blend particularly well for use in abdominal massages.
Frankincense Essential Oi
Frankincense Essential Oil is another essential oil which is invaluable for both men and women. Frankincense Essential Oil is immensely anti-inflammatory, which is the precursor to all terminal and degenerative disease, and is present in all auto-immune conditions. It is also the essential oil of choice to reduce Cortisol levels.
Cortisol is the fight or flight hormone, also known as the ‘stress hormone’. There’s good reason why the Buddhists and Catholics use it in their devotional and meditative practices.
Thyme Essential Oil
Thyme Essential Oil is not the most alluring of Essential Oils from an aromatic standpoint, but it is a very important Essential Oil for both men and women. Thyme Essential Oil assists with Progesterone production, which helps to restore optimal Progesterone levels.
Men are generally Progesterone deficient because of their exposure to environmental Oestrogens, which is going a long way to feminising their appearance.
Thyme Essential Oil has an equally important role for women. It helps with infertility issues, menopause, fibroids and PCOS, as well as assisting with emotional disorders which are a consequence of hormonal imbalance, such as depression and anxiety.
Thyme Essential Oil will even help with hair loss and insomnia.
How to use: Again, a few drops in a good carrier oil for abdominal application is ideal.
***Lavender Essential Oil is another essential oil that will help with hair loss, (as is Rosemary), that also addresses the problem of insomnia by assisting the body to right it’s hormonal imbalances.
*Most of these oils are found in FACIAL OIL No. 2 along with the unfeasibly expensive Rose Otto Essential Oil, which is prohibitively expensive for most of us. However, Rose Otto Essential Oil is also an important Essential Oil when it comes to balancing hormones and alleviating anxiety and depression.
So, somewhat unsurprisingly, I advocate that EVERYONE who isn’t pregnant should use FACIAL OIL No. 2! Joking aside… it really isn’r a bad idea!
***As you will learn very soon, the Myrrh and Patchouli in FACIAL OIL No. 2 are also very important for hormone balance… just carry on reading 🙂
My Favourite Adaptogenic Herbs
Here’s some more information about my favourite adaptogenic herbs, that were also covered in Hormone Health Part Four:
Ashwagandha, in particular, can be extremely effective at balancing hormones. It benefits thyroid function because it promotes the scavenging of free radicals which cause cellular damage. Ashwagandha can be used to support a sluggish or overactive thyroid. It can also help to overcome adrenal fatigue.
Our adrenals sit on top of our kidneys, and are responsible for the production of Cortisol and Adrenalin, which are described in more detail in Hormone Health One and Two…
Our adrenals are negatively impacted by a lot of things…
- Electronic devices
- Dirty energy
*Female bodies use Progesterone to make Cortisol… this is why stress is so much more obvious in women than in men! And, it’s why it is so much more damaging.
***With insufficient Progesterone women soon become Oestrogen dominant.
Holy Basil, (aka Tulsi or Tulasi), helps to regulate cortisol levels. It is also thought that Holy Basil can also protect our major organs and bodily tissue against environmental toxins, including heavy metals, thereby helping to preserve our hormonal integrity.
I recommend you read the following to learn ways of detoxing and keeping healthy, both physically and mentally
And finally… Now to the essential oils containing Phenols I promised to tell you about in my last article…
Essential Oils With Phenols
Essential oils with phenols tend to be the ones that can cause skin irritation. This is why Wild As The Wind has developed a Phenol blend of oils, recommended for use every third day. However, if you are an experienced user of essential oils, you may want to make your own Phenol blend.
The Wild As The Wind product is called Hormone Detox as it is expressly created to force Xenoestrogens from our cell receptor sites.
Xenoestrogens attach themselves to our cell receptor sites and refuse to let go. This is why we need to eat plenty of cruciferous vegetables and use essential oils with Phenols in them to keep our receptor sites clear.
Without clear cell receptor sites for our natural hormones to dock, we will inevitably suffer from an hormone imbalance.
Phenol containing essential oils are comprised of smaller compounds than are found in other essential oils.
The following essential oils all contain Phenols in varying amounts…
- Calamus or Cane
- Cassia & Cinnamon
- Tea Tree
Rebuilding Cell Receptor Sites
After the Phenols come the Sesquiterpenes!
The essential oils containing Sesquiterpenes help to repair damaged cell receptor sites. Xenoestrogens are the main culprits in causing damage to the cell receptor sites, but heavy metals are rather partial to crashing around and causing them damage also.
Oestrogen mimicking Xenoestrogens don’t really fit in the cell receptor sites like natural Oestrogens do, and so they damage the docking area.
Sesquiterpenes containing essential oils include…
- Ylang Ylang
- German Chamomile
Here’s a partial list of the Sesquiterpenes content of some of the principle oils in Wild As The Wind face oils and hormone balancing blends.
Cedarwood 98% (FACIAL OIL No. 7)
Sandalwood 90% (FACIAL OIL No. 2)
Black Pepper 74% (Hormone Balance)
Patchouli 71% (FACIAL OIL No. 2)
Myrrh 62% (FACIAL OIL No. 2)
Ginger 59% (Cellulite Vanishing Oil)
Frankincense 8% (FACIAL OIL No. 2)
Other significant sources of Sesquiterpenes that Wild As The Wind sell as individual essential oils.
We recommend Hormone His & Hers for this phase in the cell receptor site clean up process, as it contains several essential oils that are rich in Sesquiterpenes.
But using FACIAL OIL No. 2 in conjunction with this would be ideal. Ya know! #Just Sayin’
Reprogramming With Monoterpenes
The final phase involves the reprogramming of the cell receptor sites. This reminds the hormone cell receptor sites to be receptive to our natural hormones.
Most essential oils contain Monoterpenes which are vital for reprogramming cell receptor sites.
Monoterpenes inhibit the accumulation of toxins within the body and help to eliminate existing toxins from the liver and kidneys. Particularly good sources of Monoterpenes are the citrus essential oils, (with the exception of Bergamot Essential Oil), as well as the Evergreen Oils. Black Pepper Essential Oil, Angelica Essential Oil, and Nutmeg Essential Oil, are also particularly potent sources of Monoterpenes.
There’s another oil blend that’s specifically formulated for women and girls of fourteen years of age and above: Wild As The Wind Hormone Balance.
Applying Hormone Balancing Essential Oils
Applying the various hormone blends whilst out and about can be done via the pulse points on the wrist. This is where our blood vessels are closest to the surface of the skin. Place two or three drops on one of your wrists, and with the other rub vigorously. Heat improves absorption and speeds up the process.
When at home the ideal area of application has to be the feet. Applying the essential oil blends to the base of the feet means that the greatest amount of nerve endings of our bodies are accessed.
Here’s a video created by a mildly annoying, but highly knowledgeable, person for health practitioners. However, if you have read all of the articles in this series so far, then you will likely know more than most practitioners at this point. So, this video is for you too!!
It’s exceptionally useful, and it’s only 11 minutes long.
Estrogen Detoxification and Methylation
The next video is with Dr Eric Berg and is incredibly information packed, and therefore really, really useful. Dr Eric Berg has his annoying traits too… but, let’s face it… don’t we all!?!
This video is vital viewing!!! And, it’s only 17 minutes long! You’ll be glad you watched it! 🙂
